Thoughts of HoMan

Colorado is in the process of banning the use of affirmative action in the state.  This would get rid of the "reverse racism" like procedures such as racial preferences in college admissions.

The proposal, set for its first review by legislative staffers this week, says that the state may not discriminate against or grant preferential treatment to individuals or groups based on race, color, sex, ethnicity or national origin. It would apply to hiring, contracts and public education.

Just wanted to get all you bloggers feedback and see what you thought of this little bit of legislation going on.

I think it is a good idea to a point. But I am not sure it will help much.

I think it is a great idea, we should implement that here in Texas. As a white, middle class male, I have three knocks against me before I go into any sort of job interview or school loan application. If you want equal rights, then let's have equal rights, not favoritism or "reverse discrimination".

It never ceases to amaze me how we are always correcting incorrectness. Nothing wrong with equality.

FINALLY--some legislative "sense"-not that it will have ANY practical effect--

I think it odd that I had a 132 IQ & basically because of working & attending school, I had a VERY difficult time doing college work-

Now, any idiot that can jump 3' or attends the U of GA & knows the school colors--can get a degree! (AND--have it PAID for!)

Equality pertains to having a EQUAL opportunity--NOT having it done for you!!!
Something wrong with that--but of course you CAN interpret the english language the way you choose--I guess!

I think it's a great idea! It's about time they stop showing favoritism toward the so called minorities.

Sceptic and Deadeye, it might interest you two to know that when affirmative action while it was initially part of LBJ's great society didn't have quotas until RICHARD MILHAUS NIXON incorporated them.
I have to ask you guys. WHERE ARE these law schools and high paying jobs that will give a black man a job just for showing up? I'd like admittance to a school I have no business in and a job I'm unqualified for!
The only reason I was able to attend college was because I had served in the military. Most of the men of color I know with college degrees will say the same. If Colorado simply punishes those who would deny someone employment based on their, race sex or religion I'd be very happy.
Let me ask you two gents this. If Affirmative Action vanishes tomorrow, would you two stop using "big government" and those who listen to "jungle rantings" for your personal short comings?
Also "riddle me this Batman." If Affirmative Action has ruined college admissions, then how do you explain the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of other middle class white males who GOT INTO the COLLEGE of THEIR CHOICE?

I think it's a GREAT idea. Let the most qualified PERSON get into the school or get the job. Kudos to Colorado!!!

So Dread...let me get this straight...

you do not see this as a form of reverse discrimination?

is it so hard to just get into college/job with the qualifications that you have...and not from a "help me" action...that is as far from "EQUAL RIGHTS" as you can get...

My problem is that I expect a degree to MEAN something!
If I go to a Dr., CPA, "ANY" company for service, I WANT "qualified" personnel available!
I don't want standards LAXED because of race, status, gender, or ANY other reason!
If you can't cut it--find another way--

We have done screwed up our educational system, lowering standards--& it is NOT fair to the smart kids, or consumers!
It is sad when you have to join the army to get a degree--regardless of race--???
Dead does seem (at least) relatively intelligent--so that is a plus--

I NEVER said affirmative action ruined ANYTHING--
I have said that ANY "moron" who knows his school colors & how long a basketball court is--can get a degree!
(2 questions on the U of GA final exam!)

I am just your normal kilt wearing Texans fan. Texan born and proud of it. I have varied opinions about many issues, as you might have already read. I do like a great discussion, some would call arguements...you say tomatoe, I say tomato. Be happy while you're living, for you're a long time dead.
