Wildflowers will soon blanket Houston's airport entrances

The Second Annual Lady Bird Johnson Tribute Planting project took place recently along eleven sites in which volunteers helped sow wildflower seeds on fifty plus acres of parkland and bayou areas across Houston.

“We hope Houstonians will continue to honor the Lady Bird Johnson’s early vision of the benefits of conservation and beautification,” said Joe Turner, Director Houston Parks and Recreation Department. “Last year we began this project and the response was wonderful. This year we’ve increased the acreage and noticed many more volunteers.”

Bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrushes, Primroses, and a Drummond Phlox mix were planted. The event was a great outdoor project for families and seeds and instructions were provided prior to planting. Last year’s Lady Bird Johnson Tribute Planting brought some beautiful blooms to bayous, parkland and esplanades across the city.

I found an interesting article about the efforts of the City of Friendswood during Hurricane Ike.  I'm sure that many of the cities around our area have similar stories to report.  This is the first one I have read with many specific details on how they reacted.
Here are a few of those details:

On the night of September 12, Hurricane Ike blew across Friendswood, causing approximately $26 million in residential property damages (including an estimated $12 million in fencing alone) and $11.4 million in commercial property damages.

Friendswood’s Mayor and City Council approved several emergency ordinances in advance of the storm’s landfall, including the instatement of a temporary emergency curfew in Friendswood as well as an ordinance designed to prevent price gouging in the community.

The City’s Police Department moved to 12 hour shifts starting at 6 p.m. on Thursday the 11th. Friendswood had approximately three times the number of officers on the streets than during normal conditions, and dispatch personnel were also increased. In addition to providing added security to the residents and to the properties of those residents who evacuated, the Police Department enforced the nighttime ordinance and provided security to other aid agencies during the recovery.

A FEMA Point of Distribution site was soon set up at Friendswood’s Centennial Park. Manned by the Air National Guard, the site distributed food, water and ice to individuals across the region.

The City’s focus quickly shifted to debris management, and this undertaking has been truly challenging. The single most important component of debris management after the storm was the City’s pre-existing debris management contract... The City coordinated with two landfill operators to dispose of the debris, and trucks ran continuous debris pick-up through the clean-up process.  All trucks averaged approximately 200 truckloads (10-12,000 cubic yards) per day.

This was from a city publication called Focus on Friendswood.

Just in time for early voting...

Saturday from a viewer in Splendora-

At 4pm I spotted an American Bald Eagle in my Dad's backyard! He was completely wild, alive and healthy! He was such a beautiful sight, but odd at the same time. Of all the years my family has lived here, this is our first ever Eagle sighting. I took these pictures before he flew off.   I was talking to my Mom on our back porch, when I noticed a large bird moving out on the downed tree across our large pond. (tree downed by hurricane Ike) I noticed it's white head and knew right away it was not the common Hawk seen daily in our yard. I got a closer look with binoculars and saw it was a Bald Eagle. He had just got done eating a fish, he cleaned off his beak on the tree and stood watching his surroundings. I ran and got my camera!  They aren't common around here, and I thought this would be a great story...it's also so weird to see him now, so close to election! Happy Voting!

Ike's turbulent storm surge and high salt content has destroyed much of the vegetation along the Texas Coast.
In the images below, the red shading indicates vegetation.  The second image shows before Ike.  The first image is after Ike showing how the storm surge killed much of the life close to the coast.

Time to get those lawns, gardens, and yards ready for Fall.

I bet you'll find everything thing you need, and then some, at the Walker County Master Gardeners Fall Plant Sale.  It's this Saturday, October 11 from 8:00am-2:00pm.

The Master Gardener Green House is at the corner of Highway 75 North and TAM Road.  They'll have shrubs, trees, bulbs, and fall flowers available for purchase.

I'm going to stop by to check out their improved facilities.  I've heard a lot about their new outdoor classroom.  Hope to see you there!

The combined global average land and ocean surface temperature for summer 2008 was the ninth warmest since records began in 1880, and August was the tenth warmest, according to an analysis by NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center.
